From Lawyer to Law Firm
Frequently asked

Questions people ask before working with me.

Twelve answers to the questions that come up most often on first calls. If your question isn't here, schedule a thirty-minute conversation, we'll cover it directly.

01 · Services

What does a Fractional COO actually do for a law firm?

+

Operational ownership. I take responsibility for the business side of your firm, workflows, accountability, KPIs, staff structure, so you can focus on practicing law. It's not coaching. It's not consulting at arm's length. I'm in the firm with you, weekly.

02 · Services

How is a Fractional CFO different from a bookkeeper or my CPA?

+

Bookkeepers record what happened. CPAs prepare tax filings. A Fractional CFO interprets what the numbers mean for your business decisions and builds the systems that keep cash flow working. Different roles, different cadence, different value. The right configuration is all three working together.

03 · Geography

Do you work with firms outside Florida?

+

Yes. I'm Tampa-based, but most of my work is remote. The Fractional COO/CFO framework doesn't depend on physical proximity. Most engagements run on phone, video, and email between visits, and many of my engagements have been entirely remote from day one.

04 · Fit

What firm size is right for your services?

+

It varies by engagement. Most retainer clients are solo or small firms in the small-firm revenue band. Smaller firms often start with an Operations Audit or Strategic Partner engagement before scaling into a full COO or CFO retainer. Larger firms tend to engage me on scoped projects rather than ongoing retainers, depending on what's actually broken.

05 · Engagement model

Do you take group cohorts, masterminds, or memberships?

+

No. I work one-on-one only. Every engagement is direct, personal, and confidential. There's no group I'm trying to fit you into. No tier structure. No application funnel. The model is intentionally narrow because the depth of work it allows is the entire point.

06 · The phone

What happens when I call your phone number?

+

You get me. Not an answering service. Not a voice agent. Not a delay. Direct. (813) 340-9569. The voice-cloned widget on the site is a forward-thinker convenience for browsing, the phone goes straight to me.

07 · Services

What's the Operations Audit?

+

A one-time engagement where I assess your firm's operations top-to-bottom and deliver a written report with prioritized recommendations. It's the lowest-commitment way to get clarity on what's actually broken and what to fix first. Many firms start here, some run the recommendations themselves; others move into a retainer once they see the scope of what needs to happen.

08 · Pricing

How is pricing structured?

+

Engagement-scoped. Retainers are typically flat monthly fees. Project engagements are flat fees for the scoped work. There are no public price tiers because no two firms are alike. We'll discuss scope and pricing on the initial call once I understand your firm's situation.

09 · Engagement length

How long do engagements typically last?

+

Retainers, COO, CFO, Strategic Partner, are ongoing with no fixed end date. Some clients run for years. Intake Coordinator Training runs four to eight weeks of active training plus a thirty / sixty / ninety day follow-up review. Focused engagements such as Operations Audit, Cash Flow, Profitability, Practice Management are typically four to twelve weeks of work.

10 · About Liz

What's your background?

+

Decades of operations experience inside law firms. MBA. Author of From Lawyer to Law Firm, used in the curriculum at Cooley Law School. I've been in the firms I now help, running them, watching them work, watching them fail. See the About page for the full version →

11 · Confidentiality

Will you sign an NDA?

+

Yes. Confidentiality is standard. Every engagement includes a mutual NDA. The firms in the case studies on this site are real prior clients with anonymized identities. That discretion is part of the work, not an afterthought.

12 · Scope

Can you handle our legal work?

+

No. I'm not your lawyer and I'm not providing legal advice. My work is operational, financial, and strategic, the business side of your firm. Your legal practice stays yours. The clearer that line, the better the engagement runs.
