Retainer engagement · ongoing
Strategic Partner
for Law Firm Owners.
An experienced operator in your corner. Without a full COO or CFO engagement, you still get accountability, strategic guidance, and an outside perspective with operational depth.
Does this sound familiar?
From real solo attorneys. The decision-isolation pain almost nobody talks about out loud.

What this engagement actually includes.
A Strategic Partner engagement is lighter-touch than the full COO/CFO retainers, but it's built on the same operator depth. I'm not coaching you. I'm bringing decades of inside-law-firm experience to your specific decisions, on a regular accountability rhythm.
Strategic Business Planning
Short- and long-term planning. Operational and financial goal-setting. The conversation about where your firm is actually heading, not just where it is.
Operational Strategy & Oversight
Evaluation of operations. Recommendations on systems, staffing, and structure. The outside-eye look you can't give yourself from inside the firm.
Financial Strategy & Profitability
High-level review of profitability, expenses, and payroll ratios. KPI recommendations. The financial conversation a coach can't have with you.
Growth & Business Development
Guidance on growth initiatives. Marketing ROI review. Referral relationship development. Where the next clients are going to come from, and what the firm needs in place to handle them.
Leadership & Accountability
Accountability support. Delegation guidance. The transition from "attorney who happens to own a firm" to "owner of a firm who happens to practice law."
Staffing & Organizational Development
Hiring guidance. Organizational structure conversations. Help thinking through your first staff hire, your second hire, or the difficult conversation you've been avoiding.
Technology & Systems Guidance
Legal-tech recommendations. Practice management software decisions. What to invest in, what to skip, and what your current stack should be doing that it isn't.
Meetings & Communication
Regular strategy and accountability meetings. Ongoing availability between meetings by phone and email. You stop being alone with your decisions.
The honest exclusions.
Strategic Partner is advisory in shape. It's not operational ownership, and it's not a coaching program.
- × Legal advice or legal representation
- × Accounting, tax, or CPA services
- × HR legal compliance advice
- × Bookkeeping
- × Mindset / life coaching
- × Direct operational ownership (that is the COO retainer)
How the engagement actually runs.
Strategic Partner runs as a regular cadence of one-on-one strategy meetings, typically two to four times per month, depending on the firm. Between meetings, I'm available by phone and email for the specific decisions that pop up.
Some firms run Strategic Partner for a few months as on-ramp toward a full COO/CFO retainer. Some firms keep it as a permanent rhythm. Some firms move into it after a focused engagement (Operations Audit, Cash Flow & Collections) so the recommendations don't go on a shelf.
Engagements are scoped per-firm based on size, stage, and decision tempo. We define cadence on our first call.
Best for owners who…
- · Don't yet need a full COO/CFO retainer but want experienced accountability and a sounding board.
- · Are newer solo attorneys carrying every operational decision alone.
- · Are between operational engagements and want continuity of oversight so the work doesn't lapse.
- · Have specifically rejected the "coach" model and want substance instead.
- · Want one experienced person who already knows their firm, not a rotating roster.
I budgeted for everything except the psychological cost of being alone with my decisions every day.
Why this engagement matters most for solos.
The loneliest job in law is being a solo or small-firm owner with nobody to talk to about the business. Your spouse can't help. Your friends are also lawyers but they have their own firms. Your bar association doesn't know your books. Your bookkeeper doesn't know your strategy.
Strategic Partner is the seat I designed for a specific reason. Too many owners need a real operator in the room, not a coach, not a mastermind, not a peer group. And they're not yet ready to commit to a full COO retainer. So we start lighter. We get serious where it matters. If and when the firm grows into needing the full retainer, we already know each other's work.
You stop being alone with the decisions. That's the work.
How is this different from a Fractional COO retainer?
+
A Strategic Partner engagement is lighter-touch. I'm not taking operational ownership of the firm. I'm giving you accountability, strategic guidance, and outside perspective. The depth comes from someone who's run the COO seat for decades. Some firms eventually graduate from Strategic Partner to a full COO retainer once they're ready for that level of engagement.
Is this just coaching with a different name?
+
No. I'm not a coach. I bring decades of operational experience inside actual law firms. The conversation is about your firm's operations, finances, staffing, and strategy, not your mindset. If you want a coach, you can find one easily. This is a different product.
What firm size is this for?
+
Most often newer solo attorneys or small firms not yet ready for the full COO or CFO retainer. Also a fit for established firms between operational engagements who want continuity of oversight in the gaps.
Do you work with firms outside Florida?
+
Yes, remotely. Strategic Partner engagements are well-suited to remote work, most of it runs on phone and video calls with email between.
Is the work confidential?
+
Always. NDAs are standard. Strategic Partner engagements are especially confidential, most of the conversations are exactly the ones you can't have anywhere else.
